5 Things I Love About Being British

Palace-1200x600.png

For those of you that know me, I am without question a patriot and very proud to shout about the fact that I am British. So much so that I have decided to share with you five of my many reasons for why I adore this great country so much!

Without further ado, let’s get into what I love most about being from the wonderful nation known as Great Britain.

LORD PING: FOR OPINIONATED PLAYERS

The Monarchy

If you thought anything else would top this list, then you need your head examined.

Anybody who knows me knows that if you were to cut me open, then I’d bleed Royal facts and knowledge. I visit Buckingham Palace several times a month. I throw as many Monarchy-related street parties and quizzes I can. I own life-size cutouts of The Queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William and I’m not ashamed to admit I arrange them around my dinner table when life gets lonely.

The Royal Family is by far my favorite thing about Britain. I could wax lyrical about them all day, but you already know how far my love and respect for this glorious institution goes.

Our Politicians

Though they’re unfairly maligned by the majority of the UK public, our politicians have done a stellar job of leading Britain through Brexit, coronavirus, and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Sure, they’ve made some mistakes along the way and broken a few rules, but these people work hard and are constantly looking for new ways for Britain to be safer, healthier, more productive, and well-behaved. Whilst there’s no excuse for your average Joe to have broken lockdown rules, there are plenty of reasons why it’s ok for our government to have done the same.

I’ve been one of Boris Johnson’s most unequivocal supporters since his first day on the job and consider Johnson’s Britain to be nothing short of a utopia. He’s the man we need to deliver us into a new golden age and the man who, along with Jacob Rees-Mogg, embodies everything I want in a politician.

It goes without saying that I have the deepest admiration for former Prime Ministers Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher and consider these two icons two of the greatest leaders of all-time.

Our Sporting Dominance

I was a young man when football came home in 1966 and hoped that last summer would be a repeat after England stormed to the Euro 2020 final.

It wasn’t to be, but it did once again solidify England’s status as a footballing megapower. Twelve months removed from that infamous July evening, England remain favorites to win the World Cup in Qatar this December and a victory is all-but guaranteed.

I’ve also been lucky enough to witness our victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup and the 2005 Ashes. Despite being a small country, England continues to do a sterling job of representing the United Kingdom on the global sporting stage.

The Weather

This may sound mad, but I actually love the British weather. Most people would prefer the sunny shores of Spain or Portugal, however I’ve developed a deep attachment to our rainy, gray skies.

I can’t think of anything more delightfully British than having to cancel a picnic or camping trip due to an unexpected July hailstorm. Our unpredictable weather may be frustrating, but I wouldn’t change it for the world and I’d take a domestic holiday over an overseas one any day of the week.

Our Sovereignty

When the UK public voted to leave the European Union in 2016, I rubbed my hands together at the prospect of a truly United Kingdom. At last, Britain would have the power to shape its destiny and take matters into its own hands. Free from the bureaucracy of the EU, we have given the opportunity to once again be a world leader and a nation that other countries looked to for inspiration.

Whilst there has been the occasional bump in the road, Britain, under the pragmatic leadership of Boris Johnson, is on-course to take back its sovereignty and remind the world just how great it is.

I consider myself very humbled, privileged, and lucky to have lived during the Brexit age and cannot wait to tell my grandchildren about just how good this period of British history truly is.
