The Bank Holidays in the UK are usually a blissful time. Staggered throughout the year, they offer the chance to spend time with those that are closest to us - and I mean that in a fairly literal sense as anyone who has tried to travel any distance over the Bank Holiday weekend will be able to confirm.

This country was once a trailblazer around the world for our advancements and efficiency in domestic travel. Trains, motorways and buses connected towns and cities with ease. Traveling around these isles was a joy and domestic holidays were delightful.

Though the picture today is very different. Roads that have barely seen a lick of paint in decades let alone any development struggle to cater for the millions attempting a weekend getaway. Trains almost certainly won’t be running under the guise of track works - when in fact we all know the striking workers have their feet up somewhere.

Stressful Time

These problems now means a Bank Holiday is filled with worry, stress and hassle about travel options as a result of crumbling services instead of a weekend that is filled with leisure and joy.

The list of people who are to blame for this is probably as long as the tailbacks on any given motorway. It’s a series of families from a number of different people who go to work each day to make travel in this country a better thing.

It’s of no surprise then that many people now choose to spend time off abroad when cheap flights can whisk you away to sunnier locations in no time. It means that the much-loved holiday destinations in this country are forgotten about and left behind to crumble. The knock-on impact is devastating to local areas and it’s all because train operators refuse to put on a decent service while the roads remain clogged up.

I wouldn’t dream of traveling anywhere now, I think I’ll enjoy the peace and quiet where I am, until the tailbacks and motorway diversions start to fill my streets with traffic!
