Former Health Secretary Matt Hancock proved an unlikely hero as the well-meaning politician nabbed third-place in this year’s edition of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!
Weeks of terrifying bushtucker trials and wilderness survival has turned the previously-mocked Hancock into the next Bear Grylls. Though he didn’t finish in first place, he emerges a winner, and a true king of the jungle.
The public showed no mercy by nominating Mr. Hancock for the bulk of the grizzly bushtucker trials, presumably in an attempt to get him to show off his trademark bravery and fearlessness. Hancock stood like a rock as he calmly navigated his way throughout the grim missions - winning sought-after food stars in the process.
Queen Of The Jungle
The show was won by former England footballer Jill Scott, who was impressive in her own right. As much as I respect the former Everton and Manchester City midfielder, I refuse to acknowledge her as the legitimate winner, and I’ve convinced myself that Hancock reigned supreme. I hereby dedicate November 27, 2022, as National Matt Hancock Day.
The politician’s appearance on the show was not without controversy. Hancock had the Tory whip suspended and faced widespread criticism from the public, who stated that they didn’t want the former Health Secretary on their screens whatsoever.
Determined to improve his image, though, Hancock rode through the storm of critique and showed a different side to his personality. He admitted that his fellow campers gave him a ‘frosty’ reception at first, adding that it was important that he just ‘be himself’ during his time in the jungle.
Hancock stated: "But I also believe that for politicians as a whole, we don't come across as human enough. And this is probably the most extreme way of showing who you are.’’
He added: "I just went in absolutely clear that I was going to be totally myself as if their cameras weren't on and that's what I did. And that is what I'm like in private."
Gracious In Defeat
Graciously conceding defeat to both Owen Warner and Jill Scott, Matt Hancock received a warm embrace from his partner, Gina Coladangelo, following his exit from the jungle. Had I been there, then I’d have rolled out the red carpet for the man and poured him a well-deserved glass of champagne.
This year’s edition of I’m A Celeb marked the 20th anniversary of its debut season. The show is one of ITV’s biggest-ever hits and has become a mainstay of British television. In my well-respected opinion, there was no better way to mark this milestone than the appearance of the stunning and brave Matthew Hancock.
