Cristiano Ronaldo has caused a stir by giving an explosive interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored.
The 90-minute interview detailed Ronaldo’s struggles at Manchester United since his 2021 return, as well as his relationship with new boss Erik Ten Hag.
After bagging 18 league goals for the Red Devils last season, the Portuguese legend has hardly featured for the Dutchman this season - taking to the bench as Marcus Rashford, Anthony, and Athony Martial handle matters up front.
The interview, released on 13 November 2022, quickly went viral and caused a storm on social media. The bombshell revelations included:
- Ronaldo not knowing who previous manager Ralf Rangnick was
- That board members wanted him out of the club
- There had been little progress in the club’s infrastructure since Ronaldo’s first departure in 2009, with the gyms and canteens remaining largely unchanged
The interview was conducted by the heroic Piers Morgan - who won the heart of the nation when he conducted a spellbinding interview with the Klitschko brothers in Kyiv earlier this year.
Ronaldo confirmed that there is an ongoing feud between himself and his manager, stating that the two parties do not respect each other. Whether you believe the player is right or wrong, you can’t help but admire his honesty.
It’s refreshing to see a footballer air their grievances in public, as too often players recycle the same media-trained psychobabble in their interviews. What’s even more refreshing is the entire premise of Piers Morgan Uncensored - a show that aims to tear down cancel culture and bring the principles of free speech back into the public lexicon.
The Manchester United striker also lambasted his former teammate Wayne Rooney following the Englishman’s criticism. Ronaldo stated: ‘I don't know why he criticises me so badly... probably because he finished his career and I'm still playing at a high level’’.
Rooney, who is younger than Ronaldo, questioned his conduct at Man United earlier this season.
Whilst I applaud both Ronaldo and Piers Morgan for the revealing interview, it seemed others were offended by it - such is the state of modern punditry.
Former Newcastle and Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas stated: ‘’He's a frustrated player, whether he feels like he's been lied to or what, today just doesn't feel right to me. It's not going to help him and he has to be done at the club."’
Jamie Carragher added his opinion, stating that 99% of United fans would be on the side of the manager over the player. Whilst it’s true that the Dutchman must keep his players in line, I can’t help but commend Ronaldo’s brazen attitude and unapologetic style.
He may be arrogant, but there’s a reason why Ronaldo is one of the greatest ever. Much like myself, he’s not afraid of speaking his mind and pulls no punches in how he lives his life. Whether you agree with his conduct or not, you can’t dispute the box-office appeal the Portuguese striker brings to our wonderful league.
