Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson believes Blues midfielder Mason Mount deserves to be crowned Premier League Player of the Year.
Mount has hit 11 goals and recorded a further 10 assists in the league for Chelsea this season, making him the joint-12th top scorer and joint-third assist provider in the division. And Johnson feels the 23-year-old’s displays make him worthy of individual recognition, despite the West Londoners’ inability to challenge for the title.
Mount Should Be Crowned
Speaking exclusively to myself, Lord Ping, he said: "For me, I'd go for Mason Mount [as Premier League Player of the Year].
“I wouldn't say he's gone under the radar because he's been great, but everything Chelsea do well, Mason is involved and even though they've not hit the heights they are capable of this season, he's always performed.
“He always works his socks off, he's always involved in chances and goals so I'd probably go for Mason Mount."
Mount Instrumental If Chelsea Are To Win
Johnson is also convinced that Mount will have to deliver once more if Chelsea are to triumph over Liverpool in the FA Cup final.
"Mason Mount is so important for anything Chelsea do well,” he continued.
“Any time they break forward or counter-attack, any good moments in a game he's usually involved in, so I think if they want to win the FA Cup, he has to play well."
Mount Form Not Good For Gallagher
But Johnson thinks that Mount’s form is bad news for Conor Gallagher, who is on loan from Chelsea at Crystal Palace.
Despite scoring eight league goals and recording a further three assists, the ex-England international suspects there may not be a place for the 22-year-old in Thomas Tuchel’s squad next season.
"Right now, I'm not sure if Connor Gallagher would get in Chelsea's team,” he said.
“But as he's been doing so well out on loan, if I was Chelsea, I'd be keen to give him another year on loan which would give him another year to develop further, enjoy the games, learn the trade and then start smashing the first team door down the season after – but a lot can change in football.
“I like Gallagher a lot, but if he goes back to Chelsea, I don't think he'll play and you don't want to stall the progress that he's already made."
