Mikael Silvestre believes the acquisition of “top class” defender Kalidou Koulibaly can help Chelsea challenge for the Premier League title.
The Blues finished a distant third in 2021-22, 19 points behind eventual champions Manchester City and 18 adrift of second-placed Liverpool.
Manager Thomas Tuchel has seen his defensive ranks depleted this summer, with Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving on free transfers to join Real Madrid and Barcelona, respectively – with Cesar Azpilicueta tipped to follow suit.
However, the West London outfit have secured the signature of Koulibaly from Napoli – and former Premier League centre-back Silvestre feels the Senegal international’s arrival can help his new side close the gap on their rivals.
Top Class Signing
Speaking exclusively to Lord Ping, he said: “It [Koulibaly] is a good signing for Chelsea. He’s top class.
“He’s going to bring power and, when you [have lost] Rudiger and Christensen, I don’t think there were a lot of better options than him [on the market] as he has balance, consistency and he could help them challenge for the title.”
Sterling Replaces Lukaku
Last summer’s record signing Romelu Lukaku has also left the club in this window, returning to Inter Milan on a loan deal after a disappointing second spell with the Blues.
Chelsea have moved to replace the Belgian by acquiring star forward Raheem Sterling from Manchester City – and will look to the Englishman to spearhead their attack as Tuchel targets domestic honours, having already won the Champions League in his time at Stamford Bridge.
