Ex-Manchester United star Mikael Silvestre has hailed Wayne Rooney’s decision to manage DC United – suggesting the Red Devils icon will get a chance to manage in the Premier League, if he takes the time to gain experience as a head coach.
Rooney joined Derby in January 2020 as a player-coach but replaced Phillip Cocu as permanent boss 12 months later, announcing his retirement from the game.
England’s all-time top scorer helped the Rams avoid relegation in 2020-21, but was unable to repeat the feat in his first full season, as a 21-point deduction saw them finish second from bottom instead of 17th.
This summer, Rooney announced his departure from League One-bound Derby and joined another of his old sides – MLS outfit DC United.
That is despite being in the frame for the Everton job last term, prior to Frank Lampard’s eventual appointment.
But Silvestre feels the 36-year-old has made the right decision to gain more experience as a manager, before looking to take a Premier League position.

Rooney’s Time Will Come
Speaking exclusively to Lord Ping, he said: “I’m not shocked that [Rooney has] joined DC United as he knows the club really well and there was the opportunity to go there straight away.
“When you are managing the kind of clubs like Everton or Man United, the club even comes first over family so it has to be his full focus.
“He should take his time to master his craft and focus on a big move later on.
“His time will come if he continues his progress.”
