Postecoglou A Great Decision

Tottenham may have just completed one of their best-ever managerial appointments with the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. The Australian is a much different type of coach to his predecessors Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte and doesn’t have anywhere near their track-record when it comes to trophies, but Spurs fans do not have the luxury of being too picky with their new coach,

Though certainly an enormous club with a lot to offer the sport of football, the reality is that Spurs are simply miles away from where they would like to be and the era of appointing ‘big time’ managers has come and gone. Devoid of a league title since 1961, Spurs need a cultural reset with a manager with a lot to prove and players who’d live and die for the football club.

Conte’s Departure

Antonio Conte’s final game in the Tottenham dugout, a 3-3 draw with Southampton, epitomized everything wrong with this 18-month tenure at the club. Easy to play against and low on team-spirit, Spurs capitalized in the last 20 minutes of the game and they allowed bottom-placed Southampton to come back into the game at their own pace.

A sensational press conference followed where Conte lashed out at the culture at the club and questioned the top-brass for their perceived lack of ambition over the past 20 years before, just a few days later, the Italian left the club by mutual consent.

Pochettino Magic Missing

The North London club seems to have lost the magic generated in the mid-2010s by Mauricio Pochettino and attempts to rekindle the fire have been utterly futile. Conte and Mourinho were brought in for the present, but the only thing we can learn from their stints is that Spurs have to tackle their underlying flaws by sacrificing short-term success for long-term growth.

That’s exactly why the arrival of Ange Postecolglou is so exciting. Dismissed at first by Scottish football, the Aussie ended up winning the treble last season and playing some of the most impressive, easy-on-the-eye football we’ve ever seen in the SPL.

 Spurs Need Postecoglou Approach

Critics may point at the lack of competitiveness in the SPL, but Postecoglu’s philosophy, recruitment, and overall approach to management are exactly what Spurs need at this moment in time.

Ange Postecoglou’s first season at Tottenham may not result in a trophy or Champions League qualification, but as long as the signs of improvement are there and their activity in the transfer window is strong, brighter times could await the long-suffering club.
