It’s time to bow down to the greatness of Manchester City and recognise them as the world’s best club football team. The Sky Blues have won just the second-ever domestic treble in the history of English football.
City weren’t at their best in either the Champions League or FA Cup finals, but they fact they won both is a testament to just how good they are. Scintillating in possession and brilliant out of it, this current incarnation of Manchester City is, without a doubt, the greatest team we’ve ever seen in this country.
Inter Milan held their own and actually had the better chances to win their third Champions League, however it was City who emerged from the 22/23 edition of the Champions League as its best overall team.
The thrashings of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid made us all believe this would finally be City’s year in the Champions League after several seasons of near-misses and shocking exits. Guardiola’s men were dumped out of the competition by Lyon in 2020 before losing the final to Chelsea the following season.
Labelled as ‘bottlers’ in Europe, City were just seconds away from advancing to the final last season before a stunning comeback by Real Madrid saw them crash out of the semi-finals. This season, however, the Sky Blues have added steel to their side with the introduction of John Stones into midfield and Erling Haaland up front and this has proved to be the winning edge the serial-winners needed to finally succeed in Europe.
Best In English Football History
Question marks will always remain over City’s ownership and alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play, but nobody can discredit their exploits on the pitch.
This is a team who have attained 100 points in a season, won five out of the last six Premier League titles, won a domestic treble, and who have finally won the covered trifecta of the league, FA Cup, and Champions League within the same campaign. If those credentials don’t make City the best side in English football history, then nothing will.
The skies of Manchester have been painted a radiant blue and their cross-town rivals, once the pinnacle of English football themselves, will have to accept that City really do run the world at this moment in time.
