England midfielder Jude Bellingham has completed a €100 million move to Spanish giants Real Madrid after a year of speculation about his future. The former Bourissia Dortmund star came painfully close to winning the Bundesliga a few weeks ago and his final game in Germany ended a spell that began in July 2020 when he was just 16 years old.
So impressive was Bellingham that Birmingham City, his original club, retired the number 22 shirt number out of respect. Though the decision was ridiculed at the time, their reasoning behind it may make more sense than we thought.
Better Off In England
On paper, the transfer makes for great reading for English football considering how many World Cup and European Championship winners are present in Madrid’s squad and how good of a manager Carlo Ancelotti is. There is, however, the issue of my disappointment with the transfer as I strongly feel that the midfielder would’ve been better off landing in England.
Bellingham may end up following in Michael Owen’s footsteps by falling for the allure of Real Madrid only to find himself frustrated with his lack of playing time. I sincerely hope this doesn’t happen, but the reality is that Real Madrid can turn their backs on players at the drop of a hat - just ask Gareth Bale.
Real Move Could Harm Development
The glamour of playing for arguably the world’s biggest club along with living in the sunny Spanish capital sounds ideal and I do not blame Bellingham for going, however the quality of La Liga has trailed the Premier League for some time now and the move could harm the midfielder’s promising career in the long run.
It didn’t take long before Owen and Bale grew disillusioned by the pressure of the Bernabeu despite their undoubted quality in the side. Perhaps the 19-year-old’s services could be better used by fixing the issues at Liverpool or transforming the fortunes of Chelsea after a miserable season.
I sincerely hope that Jude Bellingham comes to his senses and realises that the home of football really is in His Majesty’s United Kingdom.
