Sublime Rashford

Marcus Rashford is once again being compared to Kylian Mbappe after yet-another superb performance. Rashford, 25, already has 18 goals for United this season and impressed majorly in the World Cup last month, with his free-kick against Wales being one of the best goals of the entire tournament.

The forward scored again in United’s 3-0 over Nottingham Forest on Wednesday night, effectively booking the Red Devils in their first major final since the 2021 Europa League. He also scored in the Manchester derby in mid-January, helping United to their first league win over their cross-city rivals since the 2019/20 season.

The young forward was on the receiving end of some horrific racist abuse after his botched penalty against Italy on 11 July 2021, and seemed to understandably lose his confidence. That, combined with United’s awful 2021/22 campaign, resulted in a rough 12 months for Rashford. Facing claims that he was ‘burned-out’ and ‘finished’, Rashford was determined to change things around.

Erik ten Hag’s revival of Manchester United couldn’t have come at a better time, then. New players came in, some departed (like Ronaldo) and the standards were raised. Solskjaer was a great statesman, but an elite football manager he was not. The Dutchman may have had a rocky start, but he’s turned United into one of the most formidable clubs in England.

United Back On Track

A full decade after Sir Alex Ferguson left, it’s looking like Manchester United are once again on their way to the upper-echelons of the Premier League table. A landmark of Ferguson’s reign was his first trophy win, the 1990 FA Cup, and Ten Hag hopes to follow in the Scotman’s footsteps by winning the 2023 EFL Cup.

Though Erling Haaland will get all the plaudits this season (including the Golden Boot) let’s not forget about the impact Rashford has had. A much more mobile and complete player than Haaland, the only thing Rashford doesn’t have in his locker is 6ft4 frame and Kevin De Bruyne supplying his chances.

England Attack Looking Formidable

With Harry Kane also being in great form this season, it seems England’s formidable attacking line is getting even better. The Three Lions were unlucky in their quarter-final defeat to France, though we must note that the Euros are only 18 months away, and I can’t see anything apart from an English victory there.

Bravo, Marcus Rashford. You have successfully silenced your critics, and maybe the Mbappe comparisons are more generous for the Frenchman.
