Former Chancellor Nadim Zahawi is in hot water after a multi-million-pound tax return was not filed with HMRC properly.
Zahawi, who is now Tory Party chairman, said the oversight was ‘’careless and not deliberate’’ and that Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, as well as HMRC, was satisfied that he wasn’t trying to be deceitful.
Though I’d never accuse one of our leaders of malice, I still shook my head about the incident - even though my net-worth is on-par with Zahawi’s, and I can easily understand not filing the occasional million.

Careless Error
A careless error or not, this kind of behaviour is exactly why the UK’s reputation is so low at the moment. The last year has seen a merry-go-round in Downing Street, a dramatic increase in anti-Royal sentiment, pretentious eco-protests, and now a former Chancellor who has not paid his tax properly. Oh, and let me mention that Zahawi was one of four Chancellors to hold office in 2022 alone.
Gone are the days where this brilliant country was overseen by leaders of the highest moral standard. As the population’s attention spans have dwindled, so too has our skill in electing officials. Though I do not hate Zahawi by any means, his glaring error has made me deeply upset, and it’s no wonder why the public considers those in power out-of-touch.
Zahawi Reaction
Faced with widespread suspicion, Mr. Zahawi said: "As a senior politician I know that scrutiny and propriety are important parts of public life.’’ He then stated: ‘’Following discussions with HMRC, they agreed that my father was entitled to founder shares in YouGov, though they disagreed about the exact allocation. They concluded that this was a 'careless and not deliberate' error.’’
Zahawi still has time to turn his image around, and I have every hope he does so. If he’s unsure about what to do, he can always look at me for inspiration, as my ‘man of the people’ image has done wonders for me over the last few months. I now find myself agreeing with those who criticise our officials, whereas before I would have just walked away. The tax error was questionable, but Zahawi is by no means on-par with Prince Harry.
Though I’m disappointed, I have faith in Nadhim Zahawi and I believe he’ll learn from his mistake. The UK has bigger problems to deal with, and I’m hoping the public agrees with me.
